The Opportunity

Maribyrnong City Council is seeking an enthusiastic and team orientated individual to join and lead our Urban Forest Team as the new Team Leader - Urban Forest.

Reporting to the Coordinator Urban Forest, you will play a pivotal role in the maintenance and planning of Council's urban forest assets. You will work collaboratively with a dedicated team, including the Urban Forest Planner, Tree Establish Officer, Open Space team and contractors to ensure successful delivery of various tree maintenance programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading and supporting a highly responsive customer-centric Arboricultural Services team to provide quality value added services to the City of Maribyrnong. Direct and participate in the day-to-day activities to maintain day activities of pruning, removing, inspecting and assessing trees in accordance with work plans and safe work procedures that are reviewed and updated from time to time.
  • Actively promote the benefits of Council/s tree population and implementing an integrated, contemporary approach to the management of tree assets, both operationally and strategically.
  • Collaborating with various key stakeholders across the Council to support the Urban Forest objectives and policies
  • Ensuring the timely delivery of work plans, in accordance with specified standards and support the Coordinator Urban Forest in delivery of minor and major service contracts. This will include the supervision and monitoring contractor's progress in meeting work schedules, objectives and quality standards.
  • Conducting audits in accordance with programmed works schedule and ensure required standards are adhered to.
  • Regularly update and maintain databases and prepare reports as required, including development and delivery of documented cyclical open space and facilities maintenance plans and programs for parks operations.
  • Develop, implement and promote effective communication channels between staff, managers and the Department's customers that fosters collaboration and achievement of shared outcomes.
  • Promote and maintain a safe working environment and ensure the development of the section's occupational health and safety systems.

About You

We are seeking an enthusiastic leader with a passion for trees. You must possess strong communication and collaboration skills, allowing you to foster a positive team environment.

To be considered for this role, you will have the following:

  • Minimum Certificate III in Arboriculture
  • Relevant Local Government experience in Urban Forest or Arboriculture desirable.
  • Experience in the delivery of Urban Forest outcomes & tree maintenance tasks with thorough understanding of the principals relating to contemporary Urban Forest practices.
  • Proven capacity to develop cyclical planned maintenance programs for Arboricultural operations.
  • Experience in providing direction, leadership and training to team members.
  • Well-developed verbal communication skills to enable clear communication with external customers and team members.
  • Well-developed written communication skills to prepare reports related to Arboricultural maintenance operations.
  • Excellent understanding of occupational health and safety regulations and safe work practices and procedures, particularly relating to arboriculture.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently to deliver high quality Urban Forest outcomes.
  • A current Victorian Driver's license.
  • Clear Police Check record
  • Fit to undertake duties as outlined in this position description
